First Candles Ever to Receive MADE SAFE® Certification

Fontana Candle Company Recognized for Providing Clean Candles Made Without Chemicals Harmful to Humans and the Ecosystem

Mount Joy, Pa. – Fontana Candle Company’s three-ingredient, non-toxic candles are now the first candles ever to be MADE SAFE® certified. This certification recognizes that, following thorough screening, the candles have been found to not contain any chemicals known to harm human health, animals, aquatic life or the ecosystem.

“The reason that we, quite literally, pour our time and resources into Fontana is not to just sell candles,” said Katie Roering, the co-founder of Fontana Candle Company. “Our ‘why’ is all about educating consumers on the toxins in everyday products, particularly the alarming number of chemical additives and toxic ingredients found in traditional candles. We want to help consumers learn how to choose quality, natural options, and MADE SAFE® has helped to make that process easier for shoppers. We’re proud to now have our candles officially recognized as being of the highest purity and made from only the safest ingredients.”

Fontana Candle Company’s candles, each made with only beeswax, coconut oil and essential oils, will now bear the MADE SAFE® emblem. Without mandatory ingredient transparency, limited legislation and little regulation around the chemicals permitted in commerce, it is nearly impossible for shoppers to ascertain whether or not a product may cause harm. The MADE SAFE® seal allows consumers to easily find products that are safe to use in their homes or on their bodies, knowing that items with this designation have undergone rigorous ingredient screening.

“Unfortunately, there are tens of thousands of chemicals in use right now in the products we use every day,” explained Roering. “Very few of them have been studied and some have been linked to serious health problems. Those thousands of chemicals combined with confusing claims like ‘clean,’ ‘green’ or ‘eco’ – which don’t actually mean a product is safe or healthy – result in consumers being stuck trying to figure out which products are actually safe and which ones aren’t. Without information from companies and a degree in chemistry or toxicology, the task is almost impossible!

“We want our customers to know exactly what they’re breathing in and to feel good about filling their homes with clean scents, not chemicals, which is why all of our candles are made with only beeswax, coconut oil and essential oils,” continued Roering.

“We’re proud to partner with Fontana to give consumers a clear way to buy products that align with their values and are independently vetted to ensure they are safe for use,” said Amy Ziff, founder of the MADE SAFE® certification. “MADE SAFE® means ingredients have been examined to ensure they don’t include inputs known to be harmful to human or ecosystem health. Protecting humans AND ecosystems is the future of safe and sustainable product formulation.”

After both developing headaches from burning a name-brand, paraffin candle, Roering and her husband, Eric Roering, founded Fontana Candle Company in 2018 as a clean-burning alternative to the options previously on the market. Based in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, Fontana Candle Company was founded in 2018 by Eric and Katie Roering and has since taken the natural products world by storm, having been named the 2020 Best New Natural Living Product by the Natural Products Expo.

In 2017, the Roerings received a paraffin wax candle as a gift, but, after a day of burning the candle in close proximity, they were surprised to have both developed headaches. After researching candle ingredients, they were alarmed to discover how many toxins are present in conventional candles. Not long after, Fontana Candle Company was launched with a commitment to producing clean, non-toxic candles. Today, the candles are made with only beeswax, coconut oil and essential oils, and they have fast become a favorite of health and wellness experts and influencers. Learn more by visiting
